Scholastic Writing Awards

We are thrilled with the results of this year's Scholastic Writing Awards Competition. We had over 600 works submitted with 80 students winning Gold Key awards, 149 winning Silver Key awards, and 228 winning Certificates of Merit. This year, judges could review works online over a two week span from the comfort of their homes or offices. We had 40 online judges and 15 folks who came in for our in-house judging day. We encourage all young writers in grades 7 - 12 to participate in the fall. Ask your teachers about the program, or stop by and talk to someone at the Youth Services Help Desk and we'll fill you in.

Kudos to all who participated! Let's strive to have even more entries next year.

Notes from the Snack Pack; Teen Advisory Board Ideas

Greetings All,

Here are the notes from the Teen Advisory Board Meeting on September 18th, 2010.

Teen Program Suggestions:

1. Shakespeare Club--discussing and acting short scenes, watching movie versions. I suggested that many of the schools will have drama clubs that might be interested in doing this at the library. I will contact them to see if they can help. This would be a great program for our homeschooling population.

2. Fencing Demonstration--There is a Fencing Club in Penn Manor that might perform

3. Winter Craft Party in December--create stringables like popcorn and paperchains, snowpeople, paper snowflakes, put out cardmaking supplies, have a book-related item gift exchange, cover the tables with butcher paper and the teens can doodle what they want. Finished items can either be taken home or used to decorate the Children's and Teen Spaces.

4. Retro-Video Game Night--proposed by the D&D Club, set up Nintendo, Sega, and Computer Games for an evening of a blast-from-the-past gaming. November 13th 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Yes, folks, another after-hours partay!

Teens who are interested in joining the First Friday Committee please be at the library on the Tuesday after First Friday at 5:45pm. All Teens are welcome to join. If you cannot come to the meetings and still would like to help with the programs--like helping the artists install their work or preparing a craft for the children--please contact Anna Thomas at athomas@lancaster.lib.pa.us or call 396-9313 ext. 273

The Lancaster Public Library has been selected as one of the ten recipients of a Teen Read Week minigrant from the Young Adult Library Association and Team Teen Read Week. We are using the grant money to fund a Youth Video Contest and Microsoft Moviemaker classes. The contestants will make a 3-minute video book review or video book trailer on a Young Adult book. "Multicultural" literature are books by and about people of color: African and African Americans, Native Americans, Asian/Pacifics and Asian Pacific Americans, and Latinos (CCBC 2006). Below you will find an essential list of books for teens in our library system.

1 I am the darker brother : an anthology of modern poems by A edited and with an afterword by Arnold Adoff ; drawings c1997

First published in 1968, this anthology was one of the first collections of African American poetry specifically created with the young reader in mind. Along with selections from Langston Hughes and Gwendolyn Brooks, this newly updated version features poems by such contemporary poets as Maya Angelou, Ishmael Reed, Rita Dove, and others. This is a comprehensive reflection of the African-American voice and culture.

Lancaster Public Library's First Friday Music & Poetry Jam was a complete success. Four local teens participated by reading their original poetry between music sets performed by Jeepster. Angelique, Patricia, and Kathy attend La Academia Partnership Charter School and read from their compiled works in the soon-to-be-famous Red Notebook. The girls take turns possessing the notebook and writing their poetry in its spiral bound pages. Gabby is home-schooled and read from her meticulously written loose-leaf pages. Gabby is also a prolific artist, with work on display at the Lancaster Museum of Art. The poets got to meet Helaine Crawford, who specializes in sequential illustration and animation. Helaine suggested reading books written by animation studios on their productions to learn more about the kind of work that she does. Her work will be on display at the library until July 1st. Teens' Top Ten is a "teen choice" list, where teens nominate and choose their favorite books of the previous year! Nominators are members of teen book groups in fifteen school and public libraries around the country. Nominations are posted on Support Teen Literature Day during National Library Week, and teens across the country vote on their favorite titles each year. Readers ages twelve to eighteen will vote online between Aug. 23 and Sept. 17; the winners will be announced in a webcast featuring WWE Superstars and Divas during Teen Read Week.

Iron Man 2 (PG-13), a live-action movie from Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures based on the Marvel Comics character, jet-boots into theaters on May 7, 2010. This sequel to the box-office hit Iron Man (2008) is also directed by Jon Favreau, with Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as Tony Stark—billionaire industrialist, brilliant inventor, consummate playboy, and the eponymous superhero. This time around, the world knows that Stark is Iron Man, and the pressure is mounting—from the press, the public, and the government—for him to share his technology with the military.

However, Stark, who is worried that the information will fall into the wrong hands, is determined to keep his armor suit secrets to himself. The Girl Who Threw Butterflies, by Mick Cochrane. (Gr. 5–8).
Eighth-grader Molly's ability to throw a knuckleball earns her a spot on the baseball team, which not only helps her feel connected to her recently deceased father, who loved baseball, it helps in other aspects of her life, as well.

Rapunzel’s Revenge, by Shannon Hale and Dean Hale. Illus. by Nathan Hale. (Gr. 5–8).
Rapunzel is raised in a grand villa surrounded by towering walls. Rapunzel dreams of a different mother than Gothel, the woman she calls Mother. She climbs over the wall and finds out the truth. Her real mother, Kate, is a slave in Gothel's gold mine. In this Old West retelling, Rapunzel uses her hair as a lasso and to take on outlaws--including Gothel.

The Shepherd’s Granddaughter, by Anne Laurel Carter. (Gr. 5–8).
Amani longs to be a shepherd like her grandfather, Seedo. Like many Palestinians, her family has grazed sheep above the olive groves of the family homestead for generations, and she has been steeped in Seedo's stories, especially one about a secret meadow called the Firdoos--and the wolf that once showed him the path there.

Presents the story of the thirteen women connected with NASA's Mercury 13 space mission, who braved prejudice and jealousy to make their mark and open the door for the female pilots and space commanders that would soon follow.

Bylines: A Photobiography of Nellie Bly, by Sue Macy. illus. (Gr. 5–8).
The life story of this daring news reporter, globetrotter, and advocate for women's rights is presented chronologically from birth to death.

Claudette Colvin: Twice toward Justice, by Phillip Hoose. illus. (Gr. 6–up). Based on extensive interviews with Claudette Colvin and many others, Phillip Hoose presents the first in-depth account of an important yet largely unknown civil rights figure, skillfully weaving her dramatic story into the fabric of the historic Montgomery bus boycott and court case that would change the course of American history.

I’ll Pass for Your Comrade: Women Soldiers in the Civil War, by Anita Silvey. (Gr. 5–8).
Sarah Emma Edmonds enlisted because she believed in the Union cause; Melverina Peppercorn joined to stay near her twin brother. Although women were not allowed to enlist as soldiers in the Civil War, many disguised themselves as men and fought anyway.

Sweethearts of Rhythm: The Story of the Greatest All-Girl Swing Band in the World, by Marilyn Nelson. Illus. by Jerry Pinkney. (Gr. 4–up).
A look at a 1940's all-female jazz band, that originated from a boarding school in Mississippi and found its way to the most famous ballrooms in the country, offering solace during the hard years of the war.

The youngest of three siblings, fourteen-year-old Anke feels both relieved and neglected that her father abuses her brother and sister but ignores her, but when she catches him with one of her friends, she finally becomes angry enough to take action.

Bloodhound, by Tamora Pierce. (Gr. 7–up).
Having been promoted from "Puppy" to "Dog," Beka, now a full-fledged member of the Provost's Guard, and her former partner head to a neighboring port city to investigate a case of counterfeit coins.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, v.3: Wolves at the Gate. By Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon. Illus. by Georges Jeanty and Jo Chen. (Gr. 9–up).
Vampires that, at will, can transform into wolves, panthers, insects, or fog invade the Slayer base of operations in northern Scotland, and not only walk away unscathed, but in possession of Buffy's scythe, the symbol of Slayer power worldwide. Buffy and the Slayer-legion travel to Tokyo in order to learn more about their dangerous new foes, as Xander journeys to Transylvania to solicit the only person they've ever known to possess such power - Dracula!

The Chosen One, by Carol Lynch Williams. (Gr. 8–up). In a polygamous cult in the desert, Kyra, not yet fourteen, sees being chosen to be the seventh wife of her uncle as just punishment for having read books and kissed a boy, in violation of Prophet Childs' teachings, and is torn between facing her fate and running away from all that she knows and loves.

Crossing Stones, by Helen Frost. (Gr. 6–10).
In their own voices, four young people, Muriel, Frank, Emma, and Ollie, tell of their experiences during the first World War, as the boys enlist and are sent overseas, Emma finishes school, and Muriel fights for peace and women's suffrage.

Eon: Dragoneye Reborn, by Alison Goodman. (Gr. 8–up). Sixteen-year-old Eon hopes to become an apprentice to one of the twelve energy dragons of good fortune and learn to be its main interpreter, but to do so will require much, including keeping secret that she is a girl.

Flygirl, by Sherri L. Smith. (Gr. 6–10). During World War II, a light-skinned African American girl "passes" for white in order to join the Women Airforce Service Pilots.

The Help, by Kathryn Stockett. (Adult). Limited and persecuted by racial divides in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi, three women, including an African-American maid, her sassy and chronically unemployed friend, and a recently graduated white woman, team up for a clandestine project.

In a Gilded Cage, by Rhys Bowen. (Adult) Irish-born detective and Vasser graduate Molly Murphy is hired to find out the truth about her friend's missionary parents' deaths and her loss of inheritance. Another Vasser grad has a philandering husband to track. Set in early 20th-century New York City.

Mare’s War, by Tanita S. Davis. (Gr. 7–10). Teens Octavia and Tali learn about strength, independence, and courage when they are forced to take a car trip with their grandmother, who tells about growing up Black in 1940s Alabama and serving in Europe during World War II as a member of the Women's Army Corps.

The Orange Houses, by Paul Griffin. (Gr. 10–12).
Tamika, a fifteen-year-old hearing-impaired girl, Jimmi, an eighteen-year-old veteran who stopped taking his anti-psychotic medication, and sixteen-year-old Fatima, an illegal immigrant from Africa, meet and connect in their Bronx, New York, neighborhood, with devastating results.

Secret Keeper, by Mitali Perkins. (Gr. 7–10).
In 1974 when her father leaves New Delhi, India, to seek a job in New York, Ashi, a tomboy at the advanced age of sixteen, feels thwarted in the home of her extended family in Calcutta where she, her mother, and sister must stay, and when her father dies before he can send for them, they must remain with their relatives and observe the old-fashioned traditions that Ashi hates.

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, by Alan Bradley. (Adult) Eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison, is propelled into a mystery when a man is found murdered on the grounds of her family's decaying English mansion and Flavia's father becomes the main suspect.

High-school-senior LaVaughn's perceptions and expectations of her life begin to change as she learns about the many unexpected connections between the people she loves best.

So, she's hoping that he's trying to secretly ask her out. She just broke up with Brian and he keeps saying mean things to her when he sees her at school, at parties, and at Dulce & Deluca. It turns out that the invitation is not from Scott at all. In fact, the invitation is much more serious than that. She learns that she and two other girls are decendants of Egyptian pharoahs and only they three can fight against the evil powers of Seth to prevent chaos from returning. The boy who she does meet at the restaurant has many gifts to give her...and she has alot to learn about fighting evil. The plot moves very fast and I found myself holding my breath, with quick resolution, many times. You will be happy to know that we have four books in the series, because when you finish Book 1, you won't want to wait to read Book 2! Recommended for grades 7 and up.

Hate List, by Jennifer Brown

Hey Peeps!

I just wanted to rave a little bit about Jennifer Brown's new book called Hate List. Valerie wrote a list of people that she, well, hates and shares this list with her boyfriend, Nick. Valerie never thought that anything would happen because of the list. It just made her feel a little better about the nasty things that the kids at school did to her... but Nick took the list too far, with a gun. Hate List takes you into Valerie's mind. You will learn how she suffered from bullying at school, how her parents were constantly at each other's throats fighting, and how she felt really alone without Nick. Constantly reminded of the shooting by the gunshot wound in her leg, Valerie slowly reveals the truth about what happened at school that day and the extent to which she was involved. Hate List has the drama of an after-school special with the dynamics of a psychological thriller. I was amazed. I couldn't put it down...and I got a little teary too! Don't miss this book! Recommended for grade 9 and up.

The internet quickening information sharing is a part of life, you can't stop it, news always travels fast, if somone really wants information they will find it--hiding the truth doesn't help
Is it better to be smart and have people suspect you to be a terrorist like Marcus or to be blissfully ignorant of how to do stuff and what the govt does so that they leave you alone?
I'd rather be smart, America would be safer if there were more people like Marcus

Personal contact is needed—notes, emails, visits, and phone calls—with your State Senator, State Representative, and Governor Rendell. Our message remains the same:
1. Libraries are bursting at the seams serving the unemployed, their families, and others most in need. Don’t cut our funding and force us to close our doors for people who most depend on us.
2. Cutting state funding will cost Pennsylvania badly needed federal funds. Federal money pays for shared resources and incentives for local projects. Cuts already proposed could cost Pennsylvania anywhere from $1 million to $3.8 million in federal funding. Level funding will preserve Pennsylvania’s fair share, roughly $5.9 million.

The Summer Reading Program is open to all children ages 0-18yrs old. Each child has the chance to win prizes while doing fun activities and reading books. The greatest part is...it’s free!

This summers theme is “Be Creative @ Your Library” which is all about Theater, Dance, Music, and Art. The Teen program is called "Express Yourself @ the Library".

Greetings Readers!

Some fabulous book recommendations were made: Bloodhound, by Tamora Pierce. "Bloodhound was really good. Tamora Pierce creates a language but uses it little enough to make it enjoyable to read." The Young Wizards Series by Diane Duane. Order of the Stick, comic series--I will have to order them, we don't have any! The Girl's Guide to Dungeons & Dragons, "so funny, and of course, meant for girls!" I had a request for a booklist on novels that have magic in a real world setting--coming soon.

How to Win:
· You must be age 11 through 18 to participate. (Participants under age 13, please ask for help with uploading videos to YouTube.)
· Read one of the Teen’s Top Ten Nominees or another Young Adult book. (ask the librarian for help)
· Shoot a short video (up to three minutes long). Make it a Video Book Review (talk about why the book is so great) or a Video Book Trailer (think movie trailer – you get to be even more creative this way).
· Post it to your YouTube account.
· Tag your YouTube Video with

· Enter your video in our contest beginning June 1st. You can enter as many videos as you like – they just need to have separate YouTube URLs and be entered separately. Deadline is October 1st, 2009 @ 9pm.

Zachary has been watching over and saving Miranda since she was born. It's his job; he's her guardian angel. One night, Miranda and her best friend Lucy are lured into the graveyard by a grinning storeclerk who promises that he has "a scary idea." Lucy has been crushing on this boy for a long time and they had gone to the video store in hopes of running into him. Miranda doesn't like to be scared, but Lucy is her friend, so she goes along. She has trouble finding Lucy in the graveyard and almost falls into a newly dug grave, but Zachary saves her by illuminating the scene and shouting to Miranda...or does he? Miranda disappears...and Zachary is in big trouble for breaking the rules! Radford's doublespeak is enchanting. Miranda has been "elevated" to an "eternal" "princess." He takes Miranda out on the town and shows her her new nightlife. She feels swept away and struggles to fit into her new identity. All the while, Lucy and Zachary are looking for her. Can she be saved? I like how this novel takes turns in perspective, switching from Miranda to Zachary in each chapter, much like Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist does (but that's the only similiarity.) This story is a lot more gorey than Twilight, but I enjoyed it moreso despite the blood and violence. Zachary's love and dedication to Miranda could easily make him the next Edward, but it's his identity as an angel that makes this novel stand alone. The ending definitely leaves the story open for a sequel, but it's sewn up tightly. I would recommend this novel to older teens who love vampires, and especially those who love to hate vampires.

Highway to Hell, by Rosemary Clement-Moore

Maggie Quinn and her best friend D&D Lisa are heading down to Florida in her ragtop Jeep. They suddenly crash into a large cow and pull off to the side of the road. Upon closer inspection, Maggie discovers that the cow was already dead, slashed by a large animal with enormous strength and claws. She accidently touches the cow, and gets a vision of the cow's horrible demise. She realizes that this is no ordinary predator. The girls are now stuck in the small town of Dulcina, Texas, with not much else to do but sit at the local bar and figure out what's attacking everyone's cattle. Maggie and Lisa have a very strong and sisterly friendship, full of all of the wit, charm, and dedication that everyone hopes to find. Maggie has the ideal boyfriend, who just so happens to be studying anthropology and urban legends. Justin's best friend just so happens to be studying to become a priest. All of the coincidences aside, Highway to Hell is a funny and exciting read that will make you yearn for more magic. I would recommend this to older teens who like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, urban legends, and Dungeons & Dragons.

So, Anime Club went well. We had a few newcomers and they fit right in. I had some technical difficulty with animecrazy.net. Who new that you could only watch 72 minutes of megavideo before they locked you out for an hour? So we only watched the first episode of DNAngel and then watched the first three episodes of Fruits Basket. Yes, Animecrazy has Fruits Basket, they just mistakingly label it Fruit Basket. wink, wink. We will be watching Fruits Basket again next month. I ordered the DVD from Blockbuster. I was asked to have a sushi making day again. I'm ready to cave. I don't know when we will do it yet, maybe in July or August. They have tons of awesome crafts in ShojoBeat (you can borrow a copy from the library) as well. I am so tempted to do them all! I will have some on hand for the Anime Club this summer and more during the Open Art Studio in July. I love the Moko Pincushion. Oh, so cute! Maggie has just moved to Austin Texas, not very unusual right? Well, Maggie moves every few months all over the country with her hippie parents, Rosie and Les (that's what she calls them.) Her mother is taking classes to be a massage therapist while her dad is running a consignment clothing shop downstairs to the apartment where they live. Doesn't sound like too bad of a move, right? But Maggie was in love. She left behind Trevor, the boy she thought was the one. Only, he broke up with her before she left because he couldn't handle a long distance relationship. Maggie is tired of making new friends, joining new clubs, and trying to fit in...so she decides to do everything in her power to be unpopular. She finds the wackiest outfits from her father's store and wears them to school. She tries to sit alone at lunch. She joins the nerdiest club that she can find. She blows off the hottest guy in school. Her plan seems to be working...How Not to be Popular is a very fun read. I mean, I was truly LOL most of the time. Imagine bringing a rosemary plant to school and having your friend ask you if she can sniff it after you tell her about its medicinal qualities. Even if you are popular at school, you will enjoy Marilyn Manson style hating the beautiful people at Maggie's new school. I had a Bella flashback when the girl from the school paper asks Maggie for an interview, but Maggie actually gives her one...and it doesn't have the effect that Maggie had planned. While reading this book, I found myself having no idea what was going to happen next and then laughing uproariously. I'd recommend this book to anyone who had an embarrassing moment or an entirely dreadful high school experience. So, I guess that covers...everyone. Cheers, Audrey

The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins

Consider this fair warning: You will not be able to put this book down once you start. In a dystopian futuristic North America, we meet Katniss, a superior hunter who is able to support her impoverised family by hunting illegally in the adjacent woods to District 12. Everyone looks the other way of course, because the whole district is poor and her neighbors benefit from her hunting. Then comes the Reaping, a morbid celebration where a boy and a girl from each of the twelve districts is chosen to compete in The Hunger Games, a televised Gladiator meets Survivor type of program where the winner gets food and a place to live, and all of the losers are dead. Once the initial shock of how inhuman The Hunger Games are, you will find yourself cheering for Katniss, hoping that the people she chooses to trust in the games will prove to be true friendships. Do you know how to be hungry?

Her dramatic script titled "Hoofprints on the Heart" won a Silver medal as well as an American Voices medal.

Wintergirls, by Laurie Halse Anderson

Wintergirls takes you into the mind of Lia, deep, deep within her mind. It is so easy to get lost in it. Her self-loathing, her hateful self-talk, and her false rationalizations about emptiness are overwhelming...but I couldn't stop reading this book! I'm one of those girls who was raised to clean her plate at a meal and if I didn't, I'd get the starving kids around the world speech and I would sit at the table until I was done. Anorexia is a foreign concept to me, very scary, very lonely. The whisperquiet blog is Lia's only link to communicating about her problem and all she does is read what other girls are writing. The wintergirls concept is very poetic and is a running theme throughout the book. Lia cannot get warm, no matter what she does. Anderson is very cautious when writing this book; she has consulted many doctors, laypeople, and girls who have had this disease. The story also revolves around how Lia deals with her friend Cassie's sudden death, that she thinks may be related to Cassie's bulemia, but no one will tell her what really happened in that hotel room where Cassie died, alone. Lia blames herself for not answering the phone when Cassie calls that night, but they hadn't spoken to one another for months. Lia didn't know what was going on in Cassie's life. Anderson also has this crossing out word device that reveals what Lia is actually thinking, but denying to others. I would recommend this to any high school student who is familiar with anorexia, is studying it, or even those who may have a friend who perceives food in caloric numbers as opposed to nourishment. Beastly, by Alex Flinn

One of my teen advisors, Amanda Heffner, recommended Beastly, by Alex Flinn, at our last Teen Book Club. She said it was a modern day fairy tale version of Beauty and the Beast. I was interested; of course, she alway recommends fabulous books. So, I went to my local bookstore and they didn't have any! We have some at the library, of course, but I wanted to be able to give one away at the End of Summer Party for Teens in August. I had to order one and wait a few days. Anyway, be sure to read Flinn's author's note at the end. I love how she explains that she was "disturbed by the inconsistencies" in the retellings "of a traditional tale" especially in the Disney version. Flinn's Beast is one of the beautiful people that you will find in your high school. Do you have a rich and handsome boy in one of your classes who just knows how rich and handsome he is and flaunts it all over the place? Do you hope someday that he will get his comeuppance? Well, Beastly, is a safe place for you to get your vindication. Kyle Kingsbury, who later becomes the Beast, is beautifully cruel to all of the regular people at his private school. One day he notices a goth girl and starts to tease her in front of everyone! Little does he know that she's actually a witch and she turns him into the Beast for his inability to see past appearances and treat people with respect. He not only goes through a transformation on the outside, but Flinn's Beast goes through an inner transformation as well... Don't worry, it's not just a love story; there is plenty of flesh ripping and bone cracking for balance. I think my favorite aspect of the story is that the Beast reads so many great books during his time of change and talks about them with his tutor, Will.

Sing, Sign and Storytime - Mondays @ 10:30 am Each session consists of some singing, some stories, and a few simple American Sign Language (ASL) signs. The hope of this program is to educate younger children to communicate more readily even if they are as yet unable to verbally respond. Appropriate for preschool age children.

Lapsit Storytime - Wednesdays @ 10:30 am Join in with some singing, stories, fingerplays, and other fun things to do with books. Appropriate for Newborn - 2 1/2 yeras old.
Preschool Storytime - Thursdays @ 10:30 am A few stories, usually focusing on a theme for the session and a small craft. Appropriate for preschool age children.

Visit with Mr. Lincoln - Fri. March 20 @ 10:30am 2nd Grade and up. Jim Getty, will visit public libraries across Lancaster County to celebrate the 200th birthday of one of America’s most famous Presidents.

What I Saw and How I Lied

Wow chicka pow! I just finished reading What I Saw and How I Lied, by Judy Blundell. Hmm, what can I say without giving away too much? The dust jacket says that Joe is Evie's father, but really, he's her stepfather. He gets back from World War II and he, her mother, and Evie start getting their lives back together while living in Joe's mother's house. Sound like a good time? Joe gets a strange phone call and then decides that he's taking the family to Florida for vacation without grandma. I know, it's pretty obvious something is up and let me tell you, you get that feeling a lot in this book. A handsome young veteran shows up to throw a whole lot more than a dash of romance and intrigue into the mix. What's more, a couple that Evie's parents befriends turns out to mean more to her than lipstick and cocktail dresses. This was a really great read! Be sure to read the acknowledgements in the back, Blundell cites many, if not all, of the books that she uses for historical and linguistic reference. Brava!

Brod Bagert, author for 20 years from New Orleans writes books for ALL AGES. "I write my poems to entertain an audience, so when the audience changes the poems change. For kindergarteners, I tend to use chanting, repitious heroic couplets. For third graders, I like ballad stanzas with a strong story line. For eight graders, free verse shifting in an out of rhyme to match tone and content."

Buck a Book Week! Jan 19-25

This year Buck A Book® will take place January 19 – 25. Children in grades kindergarten through 12th can participate by picking up materials from the youth services desk at the library. Or, they can stop by The Literacy Council at 38 West King Street in Lancaster.

BUCK A BOOK® was designed to get kids enthused about reading while providing a service to the community. Students read books, obtain pledges, and win prizes for their participation. Funds raised during Buck A Book® enable The Literacy Council to provide free literacy services to adults in Lancaster and Lebanon counties.

Our organization, a local non-profit agency, is committed to promoting literacy. Through the talents of professional staff and trained tutors, we assist adults in acquiring the math, reading, writing, and English communication skills needed to solve problems of daily living and to achieve personal goals. The results are that people get new or better jobs, help their children with homework, or sit down to read a book for the first time.

Jen's Picture Book Fave of the Week

A Frog in the Bog by Karma Wilson

This is one of my favorite picture books ever! It has it all with great illustrations, a funny plot, and a great rhythm that makes it a perfect for reading aloud. The frog is adorable but the book has a tiny bit of gross factor so it appeals to kids (and grownups) with all interests. You can find it in the picture book section at LPL along with Wilson's other great books including Bear Wants More and Bear Snores On. To get in the holiday spirit also look for her titles Bear Stays Up for Christmas and Dinos in the Snow.

Sing, Sign and Storytime is wonderful fun and educational too! Each session consists of some singing, some stories, and a few simple American Sign Language (ASL) signs. Wow! I just finished Looking for Alaska, by John Green. Ok, I finished it a couple of weeks ago, but I haven't had time to write to you about it until now. This novel was so moving, poetic, and just plain fun (so many cool pranks!). Venture into the 'Great Unknown'? No way, it will forever be the 'Great Perhaps' from now on! Looking for Alaska has tragedy, teen angst, a little romance, and a lot of introspection. Tell me if you're not tempted to raid the biography section after reading this book! I will be very surprised. Famous last words for this blog? Um, you can look at our Dictionary of Last Words or reserve the BookMobile's copy of Famous Last Words. You will be inspired, I promise.

Just in case you haven't seen this fabulous site, please check it out (Click on the blog title). There are tons of free downloadable stuff that will keep you busy while you're waiting for the movie to come out on DVD so you can borrow it from the library and watch it over and over again! There's also an interview with Robert Patterson that I haven't seen on other sites. Don't forget, you can reserve copies of the books in the Twilight series if they aren't on the shelf. Falling for Rapunzel by Leah Wilcox

I've fallen for this very funny fractured fairy tale. Follow the tale of Rapunzel on a bad hair day and find out what she actually throws down to the Prince who arrives to save her. This picture book is fun for preschoolers but really comes into its own with school age kids. They will get all the inside jokes and can compare this story with that of the original. If you want to introduce your child to a new kind of princess, pick up Falling for Rapunzel, and be prepared to fall out of your seat laughing hysterically. Martha Speaks - PBS Kids

Good Dog! Great Vocabulary!

Weekdays on PBS Kids there is a show called Martha Speaks based on a series of books by Susan Meddaugh about a dog who loves to talk. This entertaining show is sure to catch your children's attention while exposing them to a wide variety of new vocabulary. It also includes definitions of the new words in the conversations.

Recommended for ages 4+ by Common Sense Media.

If you like this show already or want a sneak peek, why not come by the library and pick up some free promotional items like a bookmark, stickers and a coloring sheet!

We are thrilled to host author Sandy Asher on Monday, October 6 at 6:30 pm. She is the author of many great books for both children and teens including, Too Many Frogs, What a Party, On Her Way, and Dude! Stories and Stuff for Boys.

I was lucky to meet her before and she is very nice and her reading of Too Many Frogs was hysterical.

Her books will be for sale and she will be doing autographs. It's not too early to start thinking of the holidays and books make great gifts!

Hey Peeps!

Check out my new paper dolls! We'll be using these at the Mock Presidential Election on November 4th, 2008, with those teens who enjoy using "puppets." I'll have some politically correct fairy tales for you to read and I can record the candidates acting out the stories with our library's video camera. Don't worry, people will only be able to see your hands!

Back to School

Heading off to school is an exciting time for kids and parents alike. It is a new beginning for those going to preschool or elementary for the first time. We have many books that can help promote discussion about this important occasion. You can check out Chickens Chickens Go to School by Valeri Gorbachev, I Love You All Day Long by Francesca Rusackas, and First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg. We also have many more titles on this subject, just ask the librarian on duty.

Leaving elementary school behind and moving to middle school or junior high can be a very scary prospect for some kids. The Middle School Survival Guide by Arlene Erlbach and Middle School, the Real Deal by Juliana Farrell may help alleviate some of those fears.

Librarians with Powertools!

When you think of librarians, you don't usually think of powertools. But my fellow librarians and I used our muscles this morning to put together our new Little Tykes - Early Learning Computer. Now children ages 2-7 will be able to play educational early learning games with a parent! We're very excited about this new addition and hope you'll come in to try it out.

Worm Race Results

Wednesday, July 30, 2008 was our first worm race here at the library. If you missed it, you missed a very good time. We had a ball racing our worms and are sorry you couldn't be there with us.

Along with the races there awas also the opportunity to sponsor your staff worm.

Thunderhorse by far had the most sponsorship with $9.47 but Norbert came in a close second with $5.53. In total the sponsorship was $30.23.

We offer up and big THANK YOU to everyone for helping us out with your spare pocket change. Every little bit helps. *The money will go towards helping us cover the costs of craft materials, prizes, and other free services we offer to the public like the summer reading programs.

Talented Writers @ Your Library

I was made aware of one of our local talented writers just the other day and wanted to share her sucess with all of you. Abbie Brubaker, one of our regulars here at Lancaster Public Library, has been in a publication called "Stone Soup" several times and participated in the Scholastic Writing Competition. Her first publication was at the age of 12... Read To Kill a Unicorn. And the second, a significantly longer piece, at the age of 13... Read Memories of Moon.

We're always interested in our patrons accomplishments. It's amazing to me to see such talent in those so much younger. Check out Stone Soup here at the library or online.

The Great Worm Race

The time is drawing near for The Great Worm Race. We will soon find out who has the fastest worm in Lancaster. Will it be you? There are still a few spaces left for this fun event. Kids of all ages can choose a live worm to race on Wednesday, July 30 at 10:30 am. You can also cheer on the worms that have been training with the staff all summer. (I think Baby will win but of course I'm biased!)

In the meantime, keep yourself busy by reading the following books about worms: Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin, The Amazing Earthworm by Lilo Hess, National Worm Day by James Stevenson , and Wiggling Worms at Work by Wendy Pfeffer.
